Contemporary art, the Top 500 artists on FIRST Arte

The growth of the contemporary art market is unstoppable and is dragging the entire art market around the world. The says it Artprice report 2018, the bible of international collecting, according to which from July 2017 to June 2018 all the contemporary art market indicators increased sharply: worldwide turnover grew by 19%, the number of lots sold rose by 17%, the world unsold rate remained stable at 39% and the contemporary art price index grew by 18,5%.

But – as Giuliano Papalini writes on FIRST Arte – the market is dominated above all by three great artists (Jean Michel Basquiat, Peter Doig and Rudolf Stingel), whose works are in the hands of the elite of galleries and international collectors. In the Top Ten artists there is only one Italian (Stingel) while in the Top 500 there are only nine Italians.
