Almost all the auction houses are recording a recovery for ancient art with awards that exceed the initial estimates but above all a great number of Italian and international dealers. This suggests a probable return of ancient art after a break that lasted too long.

Three intense days of auctions have just ended at Cambi, which has successfully inaugurated the upcoming summer season. Four auctions dedicated to ancient art were held within the splendid setting of Castello Mackenzie, Villa Bucci-Errani in FaenzaOld Master PaintingsSculpture and art objectsXNUMXth-XNUMXth century sculpture, with a turnover that is around 4 million euro and an average earnings percentage of 150% compared to estimates of departure.

It was a record sale that hesitated on Tuesday: the auction VILLA BUCCI-ERRANI IN FAENZA saw almost the 90% of lots sold and has more than doubled the estimates, arriving at 260% of sales by value for a total of awards equal to 1.600.000 €. An announced success, given the quality and rarity of the lots at auction: the villa in Faenza in fact represents a refined cross-section of post-war Italian collecting. The long round, which saw Italian and international collectors and dealers compete for a good 7 hours, recorded incredible performances for Venetian furniture and paintings: this is the case of the Rococo commode in lacquered wood with gold highlights from the second half of the XNUMXth century, the top lot sold to 194.000 €, And the Console with mirror from the workshop of Giuseppe Lorenzo Briati (1686-1772), sold at the best offer for 181.000 €. Among the paintings sold, the evocative panel attributed to Ghirlandaio stands out, already sold at auction by Sotheby's in 1981, depicting the Enthroned Madonna and four saints (San Pietro, San Paolo, Santa Lucia, Santa Cristina di Bolsena), awarded at the price of 100.000 €.

Also worth mentioning is the exceptional group of Renaissance enamels, which starting from an estimate of 60/80.000 euros have reached the record figure of 220.000 €, including the precious one Cup with lid declared of historic-artistic interest and already subject to restrictions by the Superintendency for Historic-Artistic Heritage. Even the auction of OLD PAINTINGS peaked with the record sale of one Penitent Magdalene of the Neapolitan school of the seventeenth century, fought over by numerous bidders in Italy and abroad and sold for the dizzying sum of 455.000 €.

The auction got the 120% of sales by value and more than 60% of the lots in the catalog have been awarded, with a total of almost 2 million. Behind the Maddalena, other awards worth mentioning are those for the Portrait of a blind man of Emilian school of the seventeenth century, sold for 65.000 €, and the Portrait of a nun with a breviary attributed to Sofonisba Anguissola, awarded to 57.500 €.

Excellent results also for the Master of Egg Fertility, whose Cat process was sold to 58.500 €, and for the View of the Salute Church in Venice by William James, awarded to 45.000 €. As regards ancient sculpture, great interest has been garnered by Two groups in colored waxes and natural materials within glass case frames depicting the Annunciation and the Deposition created between the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries, sold to 10.500 €, and from the Madonna with Child in carved and painted wood, awarded for 10.000 €. The catalog dedicated to XNUMXth and XNUMXth century sculpture saw the bronze by Italo Griselli as the top lot of the day, The walker, sold to 52.500 €, and Modesty in marble by Cesare Lapini, awarded at the best offer for 35.000 €.
