Not all that glitters is stock, in fact in the spotlight today there are gold and silver. In a still summery climate, weighed down by news of Covid cases on the rise in the world and by US-China tensions, European stock markets close mixed and Wall Street travels in contrast, while raw materials appreciate.

It should be noted that Beijing has approved the patent for a vaccine called 'Ad5-nCoV' and developed by the Chinese company CanSino Biologics, in collaboration with the Institute of Biotechnology of the Academy of Military Medical Sciences of the People's Republic. Listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Cansino Biologics Inc (HK:6185) closed the session up more than 13% on the news.

A boost to optimism comes from the record data of US manufacturers' confidence, which rose to 78 points, the same maximum level reached in 1998. Caution is instead dictated by tensions with China and by Donald Trump's new attack on Huawei, renamed Spywei, as well as by the postponement of high-level trade talks, scheduled last Saturday to assess compliance with the bilateral agreements (phase 1) signed in January; at the moment, a new date has not been set, but White House adviser Peter Navarro tells 'CNBC' that the negotiations between the first two world economies on the issue of duties are continuing as envisaged in the roadmap. 

Furthermore, the Empire State index, which measures the performance of manufacturing activity in the New York area, collapsed from 17,2 to 3,7 points in August, disappointing the expectations of analysts, who expected a rise to 15 points. It is clear that the pandemic is not giving discounts to any country, as also revealed by the historic collapse of Japanese GDP, -7,8% in the second quarter.

To deal with this difficult phase, the Chinese central bank has injected liquidity of 700 billion yuan into the banking system. 

In this context the dollar stay under pressure. The euro-dollar exchange rate is in favor of the single currency at 1,186. The pound retreats slightly against the euro (0,906) in view of the new round of talks on Brexit, with a new meeting scheduled for tomorrow in the demanding negotiations with the European Union.

Finally, at 17pm, thegold spot, which recently exceeded $2000, climbs 2,03% above $1984 an ounce, while thesilver, the real surprise of 2020, appreciates by 3,5% to 27,4 dollars an ounce. WisdomTree sees it at $36 by July 2021. Already this July it achieved a 34% increase in July, bringing the gold/silver ratio to around 74 points.
