Argentina at risk of default again: ultimatum on Wednesday

Buenos Aires is still at risk of financial collapse. If by Wednesday 30 July, the day after tomorrow, the delegation sent to New York does not find an agreement with the investors who are demanding payment of Argentina's debt, the South American country will be forced into default.

President Cristina Kirchner and Economy Minister Axel Kicillof will not be present at the trip to the United States, both of whom are traveling to Caracas. The delegation will instead be led by the Secretary of Finance Pablo Lopez, the Legal and Administrative Secretary of the Economy Federico Gastón Thea and the Attorney of the Treasury Angelina Abbona.

The coordinator of the negotiations said that "the intention is to establish fair conditions for all shareholders". Adding then that "every negotiation needs the necessary time". Therefore tomorrow there will be an attempt to resume the dialogue on "obligations not contracted by the government in office".

Tomorrow will therefore be crucial in avoiding another default after the one in 2001, when – the coordinating Minister also affirms – “it took some time to negotiate the conditions of the Argentine debt”. Argentina will ask for more time for the holdouts to heal, and in the meantime it will ensure payment to bondholders, trying to avoid a new collapse of its economy.
