ArcelorMittal, best quarter in the last 10 years

The iron and steel giant benefits from the recovery and the increase in steel prices, but the Taranto question remains a burning one. The unions confirm the strike for May 11: "Situation on the brink of collapse"

ArcelorMittal, best quarter in the last 10 years

Despite the difficulties related to the fate of the former Ilva of Taranto, which it still owns even if Invitalia entered the share capital with over 1 billion euros, ArcelorMittal it's having a great time financially globally. The first steel group in the world has in fact closed the best quarter of the last decade, benefiting from the resumption of activity industry after the global health crisis and the raw material price increases, especially of steel, on world markets. The result is almost double net income compared to the fourth quarter of 2020 and a 15% increase in revenues: “The first quarter of the year was our best quarter of the decade,” confirmed Aditya Mittal, the new CEO of the group appointed in February and son of the founder, who nevertheless said he was "aware of the ongoing health challenge in the world, especially in emerging economies" such as India, which among other things has been overwhelmed by the Covid emergency in recent weeks.

In communicating the quarterly ArcelorMittal he also clarified a few things about the fate of Taranto, whose iron and steel pole in the meantime has changed its name, after the entry of Invitalia, into Steelworks of Italy. The company, concludes the note, “it is the only one in Italy to produce primary steel, fundamental for the national mechanical supply chain, which, as is known, accounts for a very significant share of the gross domestic product". However, the situation around the former Ilva plants is still very tense: in recent days the Fiom CGIL and Uilm unions have confirmed the postponement of the strike initially called for April 23 in the Taranto iron and steel plant, with a protest garrison in front of the Mise, next May 11, the day on which Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has convened a summit in Rome, in the early afternoon, with the engineering organizations, CGIL, CISL, UIL, Ugl and Usb.

Fiom and Uilm, regarding the agreement between ArcelorMittal Italia and Invitalia, say that "regarding the conditions precedent necessary to complete the purchase of the Ilva business units, according to what ArcelorMittal communicated, there seems to be no question relating to the 'trade union agreement', in particular with regard to revocation of layoffs already foreseen. "The situation is on the verge of collapse and ArcelorMittal is responsible for what is happening”, the unions say.
