“ART021 Shanghai” opens: Contemporary Art Fair

The seventh edition of the ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair will take place from November 7 to 10 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. 111 world-leading galleries from 18 countries and 57 cities have been selected to showcase contemporary art and design from established and emerging artists.

One of the most important contemporary art fairs in Asia, ART021 reinforces its ongoing commitment to harnessing local resources in a global perspective, supporting contemporary Chinese art and nurturing new generations of Asian collectors. A decidedly interesting fair to understand how the internal and not yet present offer evolves

Local galleries continue to be heavily featured in the 2019 edition. Over 70% of galleries have spaces in China and other Asian regions. While many western blue chip galleries return to ART021 once again, the This year's fair convenes a solid roster of young galleries participating in ART021 for the first time. Featured regions span from Europe and North America to emerging markets, including Southeast Asia and the Middle East.

ART021 is part of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival program for seven consecutive years. As one of the initiators of the Shanghai International Artwork Exchange Month to be launched this November, ART021 continues to cooperate with art institutions, museums, auction houses and art galleries from home and abroad to promote the vigorous development of Shanghai art market and to make Shanghai the next art hub and global destination .

The invited DETOUR section investigates discourses from regions beyond Euro-American fabricated geographic networks and canonized narratives, in the hope of understanding artistic, intellectual, social, political, and economic exchanges and developments on a global scale from diverse viewpoints. 2019 DETOUR is titled Silk Roads. It focuses on intricate trade routes from an immense segment of the ancient Silk Road. The exhibition loosely follows in the footsteps of Marco Polo to revisit the conflicts, compromises and interactions in the continental network of Eurasia. 12 invited galleries from China, Korea, Iran, the UAE, Romania, Indonesia, Thailand and the UK will join forces to chart the regions' renewed sensibilities and influence, offering visitors an alternative mode of visual experience.

APPROACH supports the development of young galleries worldwide by applying a different pricing model to the main section. Participating galleries will present a solo or group exhibition with less than three artists with a curatorial approach. This year's APPROACH features 18 promising galleries with 12 first-time entrants: ASKERI GALLERY (Moscow), G. GALLERY (Seoul), HATCH ART PROJECT (Singapore), ISART GALLERY (Kaohsiung), GALLERY KICHE (Seoul) , METAPHYSICAL ART GALLERY (Taipei), O2art (Beijing), ORIGINAL SONG GALLERY (Shanghai), PéKIN FIN ARTS (Beijing), THE CLUB (Tokyo), VIN GALLERY (Ho Chi Minh City), YOD GALLERY (Osaka).

The BEYOND section transcends the spatial limit of traditional art fair booths. It features large-scale paintings, sculptures and installations in the public area of ​​ART021. BEYOND-EXTENDS integrates contemporary art installations into public life by placing them in public spaces outside the fair. Through artist collaborations, BEYOND-EXTENDS promotes public art in China and engages with the local Shanghai community. This year BEYOND-EXTENDS will broaden its scope to cover a number of commercial complexes, infiltrating the corners of the city with more varied public art projects.
