Apple: 234 million fine for patent infringement

Apple must pay the University of Wisconsin a $234 million settlement. A United States court established it.

The lawsuit concerned the infringement of some patents on chips (A7, A8 and A8X) for mobile technology, in particular the iPad and iPhone, which had been registered by some University researchers. The fine is in any case 165 million less than the sum requested by the counterparty.

According to the Jury, Apple's A7 chips (and, potentially, subsequent models) equipped with iPhone 5 S, iPad Air and iPad Mini with Retina display, use a technology patented by the University in 1998 that improves the speed and processor efficiency, increasing battery life by more than two hours.

Apple had defended itself by claiming that the patents in question were no longer valid.
