Apple Intelligence, OpenAI's artificial intelligence arrives on iPhones: here's how it works

It took a while, but finally Apple presented its Artificial Intelligence. Although not an internal creation, but the result of a partnership, already widely announced, with OpenAI, during the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) the Cupertino company presented “Apple Intelligence” a system that integrates the advanced ChatGPT capabilities directly on iOS, iPadOS and macOS.

Apple Intelligence will be integrated at the end of the year, with new versions of the systems for iPhone, iPad and Mac. Access to ChatGPT will be via Siri. Apple Intelligence introduces a Significant Siri update, turning it into a chatbot able to converse and understand the context. Siri will be deeply integrated into Apple's operating systems, allowing advanced interactions and the ability to interact with apps such as Mail and Maps. It's Siri's biggest update in over a decade.

"It's personal, powerful, and private, and it's built into the apps you rely on every day. Introducing Apple Intelligence: our next chapter in AI" commented Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.

Cook emphasized that AI will be powerful, intuitive, integrated into Apple products, adapted to personal context but also designed to guarantee privacy.

“We are excited to write a new chapter in the history of Apple innovations. Apple Intelligence revolutionizes what our users can do with our products, and what our products can do for our users,” he said Tim Cook. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with each user's specific context to deliver truly useful intelligence. And access to information happens in a way totally private and secure, to help people do the things they care about most. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can't wait for users to discover what it can do."

Apple and the partnership with OpenAI

For Cook, this integration of AI into Apple systems represents a “evolutionary leap” which will redefine the user experience.

Excited about this collaboration too Sam altman highlighting how Apple shares a commitment to security and innovation.

"Very happy to partner with Apple to integrate ChatGPT into their devices later this year! I think you will really like it” the comment on X by the CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman. Although the terms of the agreement were not revealed, it was confirmed that theUsing ChatGPT will be free for iPhone owners.

Siri may use ChatGPT, with your permission, to answer questions and analyze content. ChatGPT will also available in Writing Tools from Apple, helping to generate content and images in various styles to be integrated into texts.

ChatGPT will be available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia later this year, using the GPT-4 model. Users will be able to access it for free without creating an account. Chatbot subscribers will be able to link their accounts to use paid features directly on Apple devices.

The agreement with OpenAi does not close the doors to other partnerships. OpenAI, in fact, will not have an exclusive agreement with Apple, but will only represent the first of a series of partners. Craig Federighi, senior vice president of Apple also mentioned the Google solution, underlining Apple's intention to collaborate with different partners and leave users the freedom to choose the model they prefer.

Apple Intelligence: focus on privacy and data security

Federighi he also underlined theimportance of privacy in this new era of artificial intelligence by explaining how it works. Most Apple Intelligence models will run directly on the device, ensuring that users' personal data remains safe. When necessary, for complex requests, it will use Private Cloud Compute, which processes data in the cloud while maintaining the same security levels as Apple devices. This system allows complex requests to be handled using larger models on Apple chip servers, ensuring that data is not retained or exposed. The code running on these servers can be inspected by independent experts for privacy.

Apple Intelligence: the main features

Apple Intelligence will offer the possibility to understand and create content, manage applications and much more, always keeping user privacy at the centre, explains the company.

Siri can also understand and interact with third-party apps, offering targeted information based on on-device data.

On iPadOS 18, Apple Intelligence enables personalization of note transcription. Using Apple Pencil, users can write digitally in their own handwriting, and AI can transform even irregularly written text into a perfect, readable version. Elon Musk against OpenAi AI at Apple: "remove their devices from my companies"

The agreement between OpenAi and Apple has sent Elon Musk into a rage. The owner of Tesla threatened to ban Apple devices from its companies if the Cupertino company will integrate OpenAI at the operating system level.

"If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level I will ban its operating system in my companies. This is an unacceptable security breach” Musk wrote on his X platform.

Musk has harshly criticized Apple for relying on OpenAI rather than developing its own artificial intelligence, arguing that the Apple company wasn't smart enough to do it on its own. For the Tesla and SpaceX tycoon, Apple did not fully understand the security and privacy implications of the data once delivered to OpenAI.

"Apple has no idea what will actually happen once it hands over your data to OpenAI. They are selling you to the highest bidder” Musk commented in another tweet.

Musk, that was co-founder of OpenAI but later became a harsh critic, the company believes has betrayed its original mission after receiving large investments from Microsoft. OpenAI, however, continues its expansion without hesitation, bringing its own artificial intelligence in various fields.
