Antitrust on Rai: "Separate public service from commercial activity"

In an opinion to the Government and Parliament, the Antitrust president Giovanni Pitruzzella explained: “The public service can also be financed, with appropriate limits and guarantees, by a combination of public resources and commercial revenues, but it must be avoided that public resources are used to finance commercial activities".

Antitrust on Rai: "Separate public service from commercial activity"

Separate Rai's public service activities and commercial activities in "more incisive forms of accounting separation". The Antitrust wishes this by intervening on the reform of Rai and on the future approval of the new service contract. In an opinion to the Government and Parliament, the president of the Authority, John Pitruzzella, explains: "In order to guarantee the absence of distortions in the functioning of the markets, it is necessary to ensure that the resources allocated to the financing of the radio and television public service do not jeopardize the existence of effective competition on the television advertising market, which in Italy still has a high degree of concentration"

“If, on the one hand – continued Pitruzzella -, the public service can also be financed, with suitable limits and guarantees, by a combination of public resources and commercial revenues, on the other hand it is certainly necessary prevent public resources from being used to finance commercial activities, a situation which would lead to an evident distortion of competition”.
