Antitrust, sting on Moby from 29 million

The Antitrust has sanctioned Moby Spa, one of the main maritime transport companies in Italy, and Compagnia Italiana di Navigazione (Cin) with a maxi fine of 29 million euros. The Authority's accusation is of abuse of a dominant position in three routes of maritime transport of goods between the peninsula and Sardinia.

During the investigation, explains the Antitrust, "originating from the reports of two logistics companies, Trans Isole Nuova Logistica Lucianu, and a maritime transport company, the Grimaldi Euromed (group that has always contested the leadership on national and international routes to Moby, led by the Onorato family) which Grendi Trasporti Marittimi subsequently joined, the Authority ascertained that Moby and Cin have put in place a composite and aggressive anti-competitive conduct aimed at hindering the growth of its competitors”.

The conduct, continues the note from the Anitrust, “was achieved, on the one hand, through unjustified retaliation and penalties, economic and commercial, towards logistics companies that have used the services of competitors, on the other, through the granting of competitive advantages of various kinds to companies that remained loyal to Cin and Moby, so that the latter could steal orders from logistics companies that had become customers of shipowners competing with the dominant company”.

“The multifaceted strategy – adds the authority – implemented by the companies of the group Honored it has severely restricted competition, hindering the entry of new competitors in the three routes of maritime transport of goods to and from Sardinia, and also resulting capable of causing damage to the consumers of the goods being transported”.

"We learn with amazement - said Moby in a statement - the decision of the Antitrust in which we are accused of having hindered the operations of some logistics companies, we are ready to appeal to the TAR".

“Having the companies of the Onorato Armatori group – underlines Moby – I always act correctly, in the exclusive interest of the customers and, where existing, in full compliance with the service contracts, we are confident that, as has already happened in the past, the administrative judiciary , to whom we will appeal, cancel the decision confirming our blamelessness".
