Ansaldo Sts: new contract in Australia for Rio Tinto Iron Ore heavy rail

Ansaldo Sts, a company belonging to the large civil and military defense group Finmeccanica, announced in a press release that it had been awarded a new contract, through its subsidiary Ansaldo Sts Australia, worth 65,1 million euros for the supply of signalling, communication and transmission systems in the context of the important Rce 353 project (Rail Capacity Enhancement Project 353) linked to the Rio Tinto heavy transport railway line in the Pilbara. The works will be completed by 2015.

The press release reads that: “Once completed, the doubling of the line (extending from Emu Siding to Cape Lambert) will help Rio Tinto Iron Ore meet its goal of achieving an overall system capacity of 353 million tons of iron ore to the year of 2015”.

The contract (which will be fully automated) is the latest in a series of Rio Tinto heavy rail projects awarded to Ansaldo Sts Australia under the RAFA agreement signed in November 2010.
