Ancona, tragedy in the disco: 6 dead, hundreds injured

A general stampede unleashes panic. A crowd forms that leaves no way out. There are six dead and over 120 injured, 12 of which seriously. This is the balance of the tragedy that occurred in the night between 7 and 8 December in the 'Lanterna azzurra' disco in Corinaldo, in Madonna del Piano, in the province of Ancona, shortly before the Sfera Ebbasta concert.

Five very young people who lost their lives crushed by the crowd, plus a mother, present at the event to accompany her daughter: two girls from 2004 from Senigallia, a boy from 2002 from Ancona, a boy and a girl from 2003 from Fano . The woman, from Senigallia, was 39 years old.

Among the wounded, over a hundred, there are 7 red codes, while about sixty are slightly injured.

While the boys in the disco await the arrival of the rapper Sfera Ebbasta, another boy has sprayed pepper spray, the young people try to get out of the emergency exits, they crowd on a slide at the rear exit of the club, a side balustrade collapses and many fall into a small ditch. The flight is a few meters, enough for six people to die crushed or suffocated.

The investigations by the carabinieri into the causes of the tragedy have already started and the disco has been seized. Investigators are moving on two fronts. On the one hand, the boy filmed by the cameras who sprayed the pepper spray is being investigated; on the other, on overcrowding and the disco's security measures. The crimes under consideration are, in the case of the person who used the spray - it looks like a girl - those of death as a result of another crime or manslaughter. In the case of the nightclub managers, manslaughter. "The tickets sold are about 1.400 compared to a capacity of about 870 people", said the chief prosecutor of the Republic of Ancona Monica Garulli.

According to what is learned, the boy who sprayed the spray - who is a resident of the province - has been identified on the basis of testimonies and has not yet been heard by the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office.

“We were dancing waiting for the Sfera Ebbasta show to begin, when we smelled an acrid smell, we ran towards one of the emergency exits but we found it barred, the bouncers told us to go back…“. A sixteen-year-old who was injured in the crowd at the Blue Lantern disco in Corinaldo tells Ansa. His story is confused. At that point the crowd would have vented to the side and dozens of boys would have fallen from a low wall in the area below. "One died crushed under all" says the 16-year-old again.

“I am deeply saddened by what happened last night in Corinaldo – writes the rapper on Instagram Sphere Ebbasta – It is difficult to find the right words to express the regret and pain of these tragedies. I don't want to pass judgments on those responsible for all this, I just want everyone – she adds – to stop and think about how dangerous and stupid it can be to use pepper spray in a disco ”.

“It is a tragedy that leaves you petrified. The thought is of closeness and solidarity with the families of the very young victims, with their excruciating pain and with the conditions of the many injured with the wish for a speedy recovery. Full light will have to be shed on what happened, ascertaining responsibility and negligence. Citizens have the right to safety everywhere, in the workplace and in leisure places, which must be ensured with particular commitment in crowded meeting places, through rigorous checks and controls. You can't die like this." The head of state says Sergio Mattarella.

'Now is the time for relief and condolences, but it is clear that there are numerous questions regarding responsibility for this tragedy, compliance with safety standards, which will have to find a clear, rapid and unambiguous answer. We demand it.", writes the Prime Minister on Facebook, Joseph Conte.

“It is absurd to die like this. As a government we will clarify the dynamics of the affair (if all safety standards have been respected) and identify those responsible. A hug and a thought for the families”. This is the comment on Facebook published by the deputy prime minister Louis DiMaio.

“You can't die like this at fifteen, a thought and a prayer for the six who died last night in the Marche region, and a hope for the thirteen seriously injured still in hospital. And a commitment: to find those responsible for these six broken lives, who out of malice, stupidity or greed turned a party night into a tragedy,” he commented. Matteo Salvini.
