Andy Warhol was the leading exponent of the Pop Art movement in the United States in the 60s. After an early career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol shot to fame with his groundbreaking series of silkscreen prints and paintings of familiar objects, such as Campbell's soup cans, and celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe. Obsessed with popular culture, celebrities and advertising, Warhol created his flashy, seemingly mass images of everyday objects from his famed factory studio in New York. His use of mechanical methods of reproduction, especially the commercial technique of screen printing, completely revolutionized the art.
The auction Evening & Day Edition offers 290 lots with works signed by many artists, including its own Andy Warhol, present with 20 works.
Working as an artist, as well as a director and producer, Warhol produced a number of avant-garde films as well as managing the experimental rock band The Velvet Underground and founding Interview magazine. A central figure in the New York art scene until his untimely death in 1987, Warhol was notably the mentor of artists such as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
