Anac, Canton ready to leave: "I felt tolerated"

Raffaele Cantone ready to leave the Anac? The number one of the Anti-Corruption Authority denies his resignation, but the chances that he will give up his position before the natural expiry, scheduled for April 2020, remain high.

The current president of Anac has in fact presented three questions to the Csm for three positions as prosecutor in Perugia, Torre Annunziata and Frosinone. An unmistakable signal of his intentions for the future.

Through a note, Cantone confirms that he has applied for the role of prosecutor "after a long evaluation of a purely personal nature", but specifies: “I am not resigning as president of the Anac”.

"It is obviously understood - he reiterates - that I have no intention of resigning as president of the National Anti-Corruption Authority, as reported by some press organs, especially since the outcome of the CSM's resolution is by no means obvious".

Many today see the intolerance shown by the government towards him behind the decision to wear the toga again, despite the fact that a few months ago, during the presentation of his latest book, Cantone stated: "Relations with the government they are good, they are institutionally correct relationships. We were also critical of the previous government when it was necessary,” he said. Clutches with Salvini on the possible changes to the anti-corruption bill or the criticisms of the rule which in the field of procurement has allowed direct credit lines of up to 150 thousand euros - it is a dangerous rule", Cantone said a few days ago - have not gone unnoticed.

"I felt tolerated and since I'm not a man for all seasons, I meditated for a long time and then I realized that the time had come to go back to doing my job", is obtained from reading the Corriere della Sera.

“Regarding some reconstructions in the press, some of which attribute misleading concepts to me and words that I have never uttered, I would like to clarify that I have applied to the CSM for managerial positions at the public prosecutors of Perugia, Torre Annunziata and Frosinone the week last, after a long evaluation of an exquisitely personal nature. Knowing that the times of the CSM would not be short, it was my intention to inform as soon as possible the exponents of the executive with whom the institutional collaboration has been most intense in recent months”, underlined Cantone.

Resignation or not, his goodbye at the Anac it won't be imminent anyway given that the CSM will not decide in a very short time. At least as far as the Perugia prosecutor's office is concerned, where Cantone will have to contend with 19 other candidates for the role of prosecutor. In the Umbrian capital it will be necessary to wait at least 2 or 3 months to know the response.
