ADMINISTRATIVE – Rome and Sicily, the turnout collapses

The polls in the 15 Italian municipalities in which the ballots are taking place will close at 67 pm, in addition to the 142 Sicilian municipalities in the vote. Pending the definitive results, what emerges from the numbers collected and disseminated by the Viminale is the continuing drop in voter turnout, down even compared to the very low results of the first round.

At 22pm yesterday, in fact, he had voted only 33,87% of those entitled, against 42,3% on May 24-25. Therefore, the voters' strike continues, very evident also in the Capital, where the turnout on the first day of the ballots between Ignazio Marino and Gianni Alemanno was 32,47%, almost six percentage points less than in the first round, when it was 38,29%.

But the growth in abstention is a problem common to all the provincial capitals: in Barletta there was a drop in voters of around 18%, while in Ancona, at 22pm yesterday, only 29,9% of eligible voters were went to the polls, against 41,2% in the first round. Similar declines are also recorded in Viterbo, Imperia and Siena, which reached the ballot for the first time after more than 20 years: in the Tuscan capital, the turnout went from 51,77% to 40,49%.

More contained, but consistent, the drop in turnout in Sicily, where the comparison must be made with the administrative session of 2008. At 22pm yesterday, 47,64% of eligible voters had gone to the polls. Sharp drop in Ragusa (from 53,1% to 43,83%), while in Syracuse the turnout stood at 45,9% (from 48,35%). In Messina there was a drop from 50,71% to 48,05%, in Catania the percentage of voters fell from 47,08% in 2008 to 44,4%.
