American Airlines: Qatar wants 10%

American Airlines has announced that Qatar Airways, the airline controlled by the Gulf state, has expressed an interest in taking over 10% of the US company for a value of at least 808 million dollars. Initially, Compagnia del Golfo will acquire 4,75% of the capital.

On the Stock Exchange, the shares of the main US airline rose by 3,3% to 50,06 dollars.

Qatar Airways has indicated it will buy market share, American Airlines said in a filing. The company points out that the statute prohibits the purchase of 4,75% or greater shares of the company's shares without first receiving a green light from the board following a written request.

The airline's board has not received any written requests from Qatar Airways, American Airlines adds.

The Gulf airline said it plans to buy an initial 4,75% stake and will not exceed that stake without American Airlines board approval.
