Amazon launches the challenge to Sky on football and wants the Premier League

A menacing cloud hangs over Sky and the football-related television rights market. It is that of Amazon, which aims straight at the English Premier League and could soon become the leader in streaming sports content. According to the British press, in fact, the US giant of online commerce would set his sights on the television rights of the top flight of the English football league.

This move, which would thus break the dominance of BTSport and Sky Sports, would fall under the larger plan to upgrade Prime which, as you know, also includes streaming video. And it could then also expand to other countries and other leagues, and even other sports, allowing Jeff Bezos' creature to be satisfied not only with occasional customers but to retain them with an increasingly rich offer.

In fact, that in English football is not Amazon's first "foray" into the world of sport: the giant from Seattle already got the NFL's Thursday night games for the current season, the American football league, which broadcasts in the United States, and the rights to broadcast the US Open and many other tournaments on the ATP tennis circuit in the United Kingdom for the next five years.

Amazon should therefore be at the forefront of the next auction for the assignment of rights for the seasons between 2019 and 2022.
