Amazon has decided to say goodbye to smart workingThe global e-commerce giant has in fact decided to recall its employees to the office who will have to return to their desks for five days a week. The return to in-person learning will start from from 2 January.
“We recognize that some of our associates may have their personal lives set up in such a way that returning to the office five days a week will require some adjustments,” CEO Andy Jassy said in the message, which was also posted on Amazon’s company blog.
Amazon Says Goodbye to Smart Working
Amazon employees can currently work from home two days a week: after the pandemic, in which the vast majority of workers worked from home, the company had in fact asked employees to work in the office at least three days, depending on the needs of their team.
On Tuesday, in a note to staff, Amazon took a further step and established that employees will no longer be able to work remotely, but will have to return to the office five days a week out of seven.
Remote working will only be permitted in extraordinary circumstances, such as domestic emergencies or illnesses of oneself or of family members. According to the forecasts, the new work structure will affect 1,5 million Amazon employees scattered around the world.
CEO Andy Jassy wrote that the halt to remote working will allow workers to improve their performance by incentivizing them to “invent, collaborate and stay connected with each other.” He added that Amazon’s period of experimenting with remote work has strengthened the company’s belief in the benefits of in-person work.
