Amazon Fire Phone: flop or strategy?

Many are wondering what lies behind Jeff Bezos' latest gimmick: selling what should be one of Amazon's flagship products for 99 cents thanks to an agreement with the telephone companies.

Amazon Fire Phone: flop or strategy?

Amazon already sells its new smartphone for less than the introductory offer, which took place just six weeks ago in the United States. AT&T subscribers, for example, go from $199 (starting price) to 99 cents current. There will be even more advantageous conditions after 30 September in Europe, planned release date in the UK: on Fire Phoneindeed it will be price quotation for those who subscribe through the company "Telefónica O2" with a contract of at least 33 pounds per month. In Germany, the device will cost 1 € for those who choose Deutsche Telekom and pay no less than 49,95 euros per month for the subscription.

Yet it is a smartphone that belongs to the same range as the latest versions of the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy S series or a phone that, purchased without any telephone contract, is worth from 449 dollars (model with 32 GB) to 749 (model with 64 GB ).

Why then bet on such an aggressive one price campaign? Some online tech journals speak bluntly of an attempt to recovered from the flop of initial sales and, in fact, making a parallel with Samsung and Apple, the numbers are not even remotely comparable to those of the launch of the two competitor terminals.

Among other things, tonight there will be worldwide presentation of the iPhone 6 and nothing excludes that Amazon is trying to do everything to remove part of the spotlight on Apple's jewel.

But what makes the Fire Phone so attractive compared to other smartphones? The hardware is certainly modern and the operating system, Fire OS (a variant of Android in Amazon sauce), lives up to expectations, but most of the performance is below of those already achieved by other devices of the same range.

What makes it unique, however, is a set of cameras and sensors that allow the phone to "see and hear everything around it": Firefly e Dynamic Perspective (3D). In practice, the system is sensitive to the slightest inclinations of the device and these variations influence the use of the contents within the software applications.

In particular, the Firefly system, thanks to the 4 front cameras, allows you to recognize any object and view it directly on the Amazon store (with the possibility of immediate purchase).

And in Italy? It is not yet known which companies will be interested in the agreement with Amazon, but it is very probable that this type of distribution will also be aimed in our country considering the appreciation by Italian users for the "telephone included" offers of the telephone companies .
