Weather alert: snow, frost and heavy rain over Italy

The new wave of bad weather that has been affecting the peninsula in the last few hours comes from Greenland and for which abundant snowfalls are expected even at low altitudes between Marche and Umbria.

The first regions affected by the wave of frost will be the southern ones, where scattered rains are expected from today 22 January, while snow is expected along the northern Tyrrhenian coasts, especially in Tuscany. The mayors have decided to close the schools on Tuesday 22 January in Arezzo, Monteriggioni (Siena), Rapolano Terme (Siena), Pitigliano (Grosseto), Massa Marittima (Grosseto) and Urbino.

The Civil Protection Department on Monday 21 January announced yellow alert on Marche, Lazio, Abruzzo, Campania, Basilicata and Calabria and snowfalls up to 600-800 meters on Abruzzo and 300-500 meters on Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Marche and Umbria, decreasing tomorrow to lowland levels in the inland areas of Tuscany, Marche and Umbria, with moderate contributions to the soil. Widespread rainfall is also expected, locally also very intense and accompanied by hailstorms, lightning and strong gusts of wind in Lazio and Campania. In the northern and eastern sectors of Lazio, precipitation will result in snow above 300-600 metres.

Starting tomorrow, however, it will be a snowy day especially in the North-East and Emilia Romagna regions, so snow is expected in Bologna, Trieste, Venice, Padua, in the Triveneto plains, while more intense phenomena are expected in the night between Wednesday and Thursday , with abundant snowfalls in the Centre-North. At the end of the week, Liguria will also be affected by bad weather: snow is also expected in Genoa and throughout the eastern Ligurian region, with locally abundant phenomena (15-20 cm). Storm surges and stormy winds are also expected in the Centre-South.

The snow, above 800 meters, will also arrive in Rome, where the probability of snowfall in the city remains very low, but the head of the national Civil Protection Department, Angelo Borrelli, said that the capital is still preparing with the distribution of " significant quantities of salt” on the territories. Snow is expected in Florence and Bologna from the early hours of Tuesday and rain and a drop in temperature are expected throughout Italy.

On the basis of the phenomena, the Department has also evaluated for Tuesday a yellow alert on the eastern sector of the Marches, on Lazio, on Abruzzo, on the Tyrrhenian side of Campania, on the western sector of Basilicata, on the southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian sides of Calabria.
