Covid alarm: 54.762 new cases in Italy and over 100 in France

The Omicron variant advances faster than expected and wreaks havoc. The cases of contagion from Covid are increasing visibly and today in Italy there were 54.762 in a single day (double from last week), with Lombardy at the top of the black list with 17.332 cases. At a distance follow Veneto (5.400), Campania (4.800), Lazio (4.170) and Piedmont (3.3.750).

The one established today is the record of daily infections in Italy since the beginning of the pandemic.

The pandemic is going even worse in France where cases have exceeded the psychological threshold of 100 cases, like Great Britain previously.

In Italy, as in other countries, deaths also increase (today 144 which bring the number of deaths from Covid to 137 thousand since the beginning of the pandemic), hospitalizations (8.862) and recourse to intensive care (1.071) while the positivity rate rises to 5,6%. However, compared to last year, the difference is visible. In fact, on 25 December 2020 we had 19.037 new positives, but 459 deaths, over 23 hospitalized and 2.484 seriously ill. What has changed? The arrival of vaccines. More than 17 million booster doses were administered in Italy. There are 108.189.004 total doses injected over a year, if we consider that the vaccinations started on December 27, 2020. There are 46.209.085 people who have completed the vaccination cycle with two doses, equal to 85,56 % of the over 12 population, and 17.019.500 those who have already undergone the booster dose.

Finally, overall, I'm over half a million current positives in the country: to be precise, according to the Civil Protection and the Ministry of Health, there are 500.466.

The tightening of Covid has literally sent air transport into a tailspin, putting many crews out of the game: today 6 flights have been canceled.
