Alitalia: investigation into fraudulent bankruptcy, beacon on Etihad

The management of Alitalia carried out by Etihad is back in the spotlight. The Civitavecchia prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into fraudulent bankruptcy to understand if there are any responsibilities of the managers chosen by the Arab company in the maxi hole in Alitalia's accounts.

The Guardia di Finanza, on Tuesday 22 May, acquired documents and examined the computers in the Alitalia headquarters. The inspection of the Fiamme Gialle was decided by the judiciary on the basis of the sentence with which the Court of Civitavecchia - on 11 May 2017 - declared the insolvency of the former national airline.

X-ray, almost two years: i.e. the period that begins with the acquisition of 49% of Alitalia by Etihad (completed on 1 January 2015) and the certification of the new financial crisis, which took place on 2 May 2017, when the shareholders approved the start of the company's extraordinary administration and receivership. A year and a half in which the Italian carrier's accounts continued to deteriorate. It is difficult to forget the words pronounced in 2016 by the president (without operational powers) Luca Cordero di Montezemolo: “We lose 500 euros a day, an act of responsibility is needed”.

Under investigation therefore the corporate, administrative and accounting aspects of the management carried out by James Hogan and the managers led by him, but above all two operations considered dubious: the transfer (sale) of some valuable assets from Alitalia to Etihad and the millemiglia points.

La The storm over Alitalia therefore continues to rage on several fronts. Not to underestimate the European match: the European Commission has opened an investigation into the bridging loan granted by the Gentiloni government. Not to mention the ongoing parliamentary debate. May 23 was discussed the amendment to ensure provisional survival of the company even if now the question will end up on the table of the new government which will have to decide the fate of Alitalia. Based on the statements made in recent days by Matteo Salvini and Luigi Di Maio, but also according to what is stated in the government contract, the airline should be relaunched and not put up for sale as a strategic asset of the country.
