Alitalia confirms the 1.900 redundancies and provides the details: there will be 280 pilots, 350 flight attendants, 480 in ground services, 600 in offices and 190 in maintenance. In the second meeting with the unions on the new industrial plan, the former national airline confirmed the numbers already circulated on the plan which aims to relaunch the air carrier. Alitalia has reaffirmed its willingness to manage these redundancies through the use of various social shock absorber instruments (such as layoffs) and has ruled out layoffs. "It will be a long negotiation but I think common sense will prevail and I think this is the last opportunity" said the company's managing director, Gabriele Del Torchio, in a brief greeting in the morning before the meeting between the workers' organizations and the company. The meetings between companies and trade unions will resume from next Friday for further discussion.
