Alitalia: closure of Milan Linate, flights diverted to Malpensa and Orio al Serio

It is time to maintenance at Milan Linate airport which will have to be closed for work on the runway next year, from 27 July to 27 October 2019. An investigation by Corriere della Sera had revealed that for the aforementioned period it was still possible to book flights from Milan Linate which, however, in fact, were not they would never take off. Alitalia, at that point, published a note to announce a strategic plan to limit passenger inconvenience and promptly updated the reservation systems.

In the months in which Linate will not be operational, Alitalia will transfer the connections to Milan Malpensa airport to all national and international destinations served by Linate. It is, on average, about 200 flights a day that normally operate to and from Milan Linate airport.

Alitalia's Bergamo-Rome Fiumicino flight has been restored, but only for the period affected by the works. Passengers who have already booked their flight will be able to choose whether to depart from or land at Milan Malpensa airport, where they will have 9 daily connections with Rome, or at Bergamo Orio al Serio airport for which Alitalia will arrange four daily connections. Or again, they will be able to request a refund of the ticket.

With these additional connections, operated on Embraer aircraft, Alitalia aims to facilitate connections between the Milan area and the capital as much as possible. Passengers departing from Bergamo will also be able to continue, thanks to convenient connections at the Fiumicino hub, towards the network of national, international and intercontinental destinations served by the Italian company.

«The decision taken by Alitalia to allocate one of its aircraft to Milan Bergamo Airport, during the scheduled closure period of the Milan Linate airport from July to October 2019, is cause for satisfaction because it leverages the recognized levels of flexibility and efficiency of our stopover that the airline shows it appreciates». This is what Emilio Bellingardi, general manager of SACBO (Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport) declared, commenting on the note released by Alitalia.

"In the coming weeks we will inform those who have already booked that the reference airport will be Malpensa and not Linate," said an Air France-KLM spokesman. "As soon as they have assigned us the slots in the alternative airport, we will change the schedule, we will contact the travelers and re-book them", they clarify from Iberia.

Meanwhile, an official note from the Ministry of Economic Development and Labor announces that during the morning of Friday 12 October, Minister Luigi Di Maio convened the trade union organizations at the MiSE regarding the matter involving the airline Alitalia.
