Alitalia, ticket chaos: we are moving towards refunds

The go-ahead from Brussels for the launch of the new Ita airline has arrived, but the transition won't be that simple. Meanwhile for the workers, who will be halved, but also for the customers: in fact, Ita will be fully operational from September, but what will happen to the flights booked with Alitalia for the following period? The European Commission has asked for discontinuity, and therefore they will no longer be valid, just as the points obtained with the Millemiglia loyalty program will be completely eliminated (save the possibility that they will be recovered in the future by Ita). The tickets will therefore be cancelled, but since the former national airline cannot guarantee them with its own liquidity (also because it already loses 1 million every day…), the reparations would be due to the Italian State with a fund or with a "reroute" on other flights.

The Italian government therefore needs to find another way to protect consumers than a simple one Alitalia ticket conversion in a boarding pass for an Italian flight. We are therefore moving towards financial compensation for those who have already purchased an Alitalia ticket for the period in which the old company may no longer be able to operate. Or, as mentioned, another option is that of the "reprotection" of passengers, again with state funds, on other flights perhaps operated by Ita, which should operate on national and European routes in a network of connections similar to the old Alitalia. However, many intercontinental flights will be abolished and therefore in that case the reservations cannot be reconverted, but at most one could proceed with a voucher of an equivalent amount to be spent with Ita. However, any formula must be decided by the Government and then approved by Brussels.

THEgeneral agreement achieved on Thursday 27 May in fact provides for a clear reduction of the fleet and routes, even if in theory Ita will still be able to use the Alitalia brand: however, he will have to go through a new public tender, and therefore present an offer that is better than that of any competitors.
