Alitalia, another tile: the Antitrust investigates tickets and vouchers

Together with Volotea, the former national airline ended up in the sights of the Authority for tickets sold, canceled and refunded only via vouchers during the most serious phase of the pandemic

Alitalia, another tile: the Antitrust investigates tickets and vouchers

One more tile for Alitalia. The former flag carrier ended up together with the company Volotea in the crosshairs ofAntitrust, which started preliminary proceedings on the two companies. The case concerns a number of tickets sold and then cancelled by the two airlines due to the coronavirus pandemic, despite that time traffic restrictions were not in force established by government decrees.

Alitalia and Volotea, explains the Antitrust, “have offered the provision of a voucher instead of a refund of the ticket price already paid by consumers. Furthermore, both Alitalia and Volotea have not provided adequate information to consumers regarding the rights due in the event of cancellations”.

Finally, the two companies are accused of having prepared poor support service regarding waiting times and communication channels made available to passengers. The dossier is followed directly by the Consumer Protection DG, headed by Giovanni Calabrò.

The communication from the Antitrust comes shortly after the initiation of an infringement procedure by the European Commission towards Italy of the other countries that have not provided for the monetary reimbursement of tickets canceled due to Covid-19, but only the issue of vouchers as compensation.
