Aleppo: truce broken, bombing resumed

Despite truce announced yesterday evening, the Syrian government bombings resumed this morning on the small enclave of east Aleppo still in the hands of the insurgents. This was reported by opposition activists quoted by the AP agency. The agreement for the evacuation of civilians and rebels from east Aleppo is suspended.

Russian Foreign Minister Serghei Lavrov said he hoped the situation in eastern Aleppo could be resolved "in 2 or 3 days", as reported by the Tass agency.

Lavrov also underlined that independent NGOs "do not confirm the reports of atrocities in the eastern districts of the city".

However, the UN calls for a halt to the "carnage" and Amnesty International speaks of "war crimes", while the international community calls on Syria to rein in its soldiers and guarantee protection for innocent civilians.
