Alcoa, Sider Alloy: full regime from 2020. Invitalia gets 20%

The plan for the future of the former Alcoa plant in Portovesme takes shape. The project for the future corporate structure envisages the Swiss Sider Alloy with 80% and Invitalia with 20%, with the latter which will transfer 5% to the workers if an agreement is reached with the unions on the statute of the association which will hold the quote. This is what emerged during the round table held at the Ministry of Economic Development. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Swiss multinational, the Region of Sardinia, Invitalia and the trade unions. The ministry is waiting to receive observations from all union parties by Friday 11 May.

According to the industrial plan presented by Sider Alloy during the round table, the works for the renewal of the plant will begin next September, while the restart of production is scheduled for 2019, to arrive at full capacity in 2020.

Meanwhile, according to trade union sources, the government is preparing a decree for the refinancing of social safety nets for complex areas. The provision would make it possible to overcome one of the obstacles for the revitalization of the Alcoa site in Portovesme through the Sider Alloy plan. The social safety nets for the workers concerned are in fact expiring.

Satisfied with the result, the general secretary of the Fim Cisl, Marco Bentivogli: "After six years, a project for the industrial relaunch of the Portovesme site is finally starting to materialize, now it is necessary to transform it into concrete actions starting from the definition of the subject who will take care of the revamping and of the restart. Today, not even one kg of the aluminum used in Italy is produced in our country, it serves as for steel, which in our country goes back to producing primary aluminum”.

“Portovesme – continued the trade unionist – today represents an industrial perspective capable of withstanding competitiveness, even on energy costs at a European level, we must not make mistakes. All the subjects involved in this match from the Government, to local institutions must facilitate the process of restarting production, Sider Alloys must guarantee work and employment at full capacity for the entire Portovesme production area”.
