Albrecht Dürer, 61 masterpieces from a private collection up for auction at Christie's

A private collection of 61 Albrecht Dürer prints, meticulously assembled over nearly half a century by a quality-conscious collector, will be auctioned in New York at Christie's.

It will be held in New York next January 29 at Christie's, the auction dedicated to Dürer (Nuremberg, 21 May 1471 – Nuremberg, 6 April 1528) with highly refined graphic works, inherent in the undisputed mark of this great master.

Each lot contains the mastery of a great engraver, the harmony of expressions of a painter and the precision that is only suited to a mathematician, all enclosed in the figure of Albrecht Durer.  

The catalog also presents the two masterpieces Adam and Eve and Melenconia, But the top lot is the superb engraving "Sant'Eustachio" of about 1501 S. (358 x 262 mm.) and estimate on request.

The engraving "Knight, Death and the Devil" is also surprising S. (247 x 190 mm.) definitely in perfect condition, estimate 500,000 – 700,000 USD.

Third top lot, the engraving dear to all Dürer collectors, Meditorenia I, large print with wide margins, P. (239 x 189 mm.) and S. (341 x 270 mm.), estimate 400,000 – 600,000 USD. “St. Jerome in his study”, engraving of 1514, without watermark, very fine and with a print of remarkable clarity, with margins and in excellent condition, P. (249 x 190 mm.) and S. (264 x 200 mm.), estimate 300,000 – 500,000 USD.

"Adam and Eve”, engraving 1504, the print clear and with good contrasts, trimmed above or just inside the platemark and retaining a white paper rule on all sides, in very good condition S. (252 x 195 mm.), estimate 300,000 – 500,000 USD. For those who love subjects with the skull: “Coat of Arms with a Skull” engraving, 1503, without watermark, print with splendid contrasts and maximum clarity, very good condition, S.(225 x 160 mm.), estimate 250,000 – 350,000 USD.

Charming too "Nemesis", engraving made around 1501, P. (329 x 229 mm.) and S. (336 x 238 mm.), estimate 200,000 – 300,000 USD. The woodcut, on the other hand, is rich in figures “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, from: The Apocalypse”, made around 1497-1498, B. (388 x 280 mm.) and S. (428 x 305 mm.).

The catalog offers both the possibility to the great collector but also to those who want to approach this "art" since there are works that start from an estimate of 3,000 USD.
