Agcom: in 2012 publishing lost almost one billion in revenues

In 2012, publishing, both periodical and daily, lost almost one billion in revenues (ie 14% of its turnover), going from 6,1 billion in 2011 to 5,3 the following year. Specifically, revenues from daily publishing decreased by 10,5% and those from magazines by 17,3%. Copy sales saw its revenues drop nearly 10% and advertising spiked down 19%.

Agcom's annual report to Parliament highlighted how far Italians are behind the European average in terms of internet accessibility. “One out of three Italians lives on the edge of the network” said the president of Agcom Angelo Marcello Cardani. “The most brutal representation of internet demand in Italy – he continued – is the one that sees our country in fourth place in Europe in the unenviable ranking of number of individuals who have never had access to the internet (37,2% against an EU average of 22,4%).

Agcom also reported on the big overtaking that took place in TV revenues. Sky last year collected 2,63 billion euros (32% of the total, with a negative decrease of 1,4% compared to 2011). Mediaseti took home 2,49 billion (30,2%, -13,2%) and Rai 2,34 billion. The gap between Sky and Mediaset is even more marked in the pay TV sector: Sky Italia holds 77,6% of the revenues of the sector, against 17,8 of Mediaset.

The telephone is also a victim of the crisis. In 2012, TLC revenues fell by 6,4% (37,9 billion against 40,5 in 2011). The traffic in the fixed network loses hits (-7,5%) while that on the mobile network gains a +6%. In fixed telephony Telecom is stable, in mobile it is back in first place overtaking Vodafone.
