Airports, stop at Schengen: inconvenience ahead

From tomorrow, Wednesday 10 May and until next 30 May it will start the suspension of Schengen, the treaty that regulates the opening of the borders between the signatory countries and allows the free movement of people. This means more checks, with probable slowdowns, at airports, but also more checks on those traveling by other means and having to cross the border.

The reason for the stop is soon said: Italy will temporarily reintroduce border controls to "guarantee the regular and orderly development" of the G7 summits scheduled in Bari from 11 to 13 May and in Taormina from 26 to 27.

All internal borders are affected by the provision: land, sea and air. The suspension will start from 00.00 on 10 May and will end at 24.00 on 30 May 2017.

Return of checks will cause inevitable inconvenience at airports. For this reason, ENAC, the National Civil Aviation Authority has invited passengers "to go to the airport with a valid identity document and in advance of the normally scheduled times, so as not to incur any delays determined by the reintroduction of documentary control".

Enac has also requested national and foreign air carriers operating in Italy to provide information to their passengers, both on websites and through other methods deemed effective and asks the entire air sector for "collaboration and responsibility in preparing more suitable measures to minimize the impact of the reintroduction of document controls, so that air transport activities can be carried out in compliance with punctuality and the regular performance of operations".
