Airports, the 2016 ranking: Fiumicino double Malpensa

Great success for Italian airports in 2016. Compared to 2015, the number of passengers rose by 4,6%, reaching 164 million.

Among the Italian airports, the first place in the standings is still Fiumicino with 41,7 million travellers, a real record for Leonardo da Vinci which in turn recorded an increase of 3,2%, thanks to the expansion of the network of connections and the new offer of destinations already served.

The improvement is mainly affected by the domestic market with over 12,5 million passengers and a growth of 4,4%. The international market also did well, registering an increase of 2,7% to 29,2 million thanks above all to the Non-EU sector (+3,7%). The results of traffic to and from the Far East (+14,8%) and Central and South America (+13,8%) were also significant.

As regards the European market, 18,8 million passengers passed through Fiumicino (+18,8%). Favorite destinations? Spain and UK.

According to the ranking released by Assoaeroporti, in second place in the standings is Malpensa, which registered 19,4 million passengers. On the third step of the podium Orio al Serio (Bergamo), with 11,2 million. They follow: 

4 – Linate (Milan): 9,7 million.
5 – Marco Polo (Venice): 9,6 million.
6 – Fontanarossa (Catania): 7,9 million,
7 – Marconi (Bologna): 7,7 million,
8 – Capodichino (Naples): 6,8 million,
9 – Ciampino (Rome): 5,4 million,
10 – Falcone – Borsellino (Palermo-Punta Raisi): 5,3 million.
