Planes: less fuel and less CO2 with Enav's Free Route

In 2018, Italian airlines saved a total of 43 million kg of fuel due to lower CO2 emissions of around 135 million kg.

The savings were made possible thanks to the use of free route, a procedure introduced by ENAV which allows all aircraft flying over an altitude of over 9.000 meters to cross Italian skies with a direct route without referring to the route network which, starting from that altitude, has been completely eliminated .

Enav was the first among the 5 major European service providers to implement the Free Route, in line with the European regulation of the Single European Sky which defines its obligation for all European states starting from 1 January 2022.

Since 8 December 2016, the date on which ENAV activated this procedure, 75 million kg of fuel have been saved globally due to lower emissions equal to 236 million kg of CO2.

The greater efficiency of trajectories has allowed airlines to fly about 20 million km less in Italian airspace. In 2018 alone, the free route made it possible to travel around 11,5 million fewer kilometers overall.

Roberta Neri, CEO of Enav, declared: “The benefits of the Free Route procedure are the demonstration of the professional and technological value of Enav, achieved thanks to the constant training of operating personnel and investments in research and innovation. By carrying out this procedure in advance of the times required by the regulation of the Single European Sky, the Company once again proves to be one of the main players on the international scene for quality of service and innovation".
