Low-cost airlines in Asia are preparing to exploit an immense market: billions of people go to cross that income threshold that allows for more voluptuous consumption such as air travel. But competition is fierce, and new entrants also have to contend with the 'stepdaughters' of traditional carriers: parent companies generate low-cost versions. Both Singapore Airlines and Qantas or Thai Airways, to name but a few, have moved in this direction.
Among the independent low-cost companies, the latest is PC Air, a Thai company that currently has only one aircraft, but is preparing to acquire more. And, to find a way to advertise itself, it has announced that among its hostesses there will also be 'ladyboys', the famous effeminate Thai boys, who, between clothes and surgery, pass into the category of transsexuals. Good news, therefore, for 'equal opportunity' policies, which extend to the 'third sex'.
