Goodbye to Gillo Dorfles, the art critic who died at the age of 107

The art world mourns the great master Gillo Dorfles, theorist and art critic also active as an artist, university professor and writer, who died at his home in Milan. He was 107 years old.

Born in Trieste in 1910, Dorfles had taken his first steps in the world of art after graduating in medicine with a specialization in psychiatry and arriving to teach Aesthetics at the Universities of Milan, Cagliari and Trieste.

Among the numerous books he has published: "The becoming of the arts" (1959), "Latest trends in today's art" (1961), "The kitch" (1968), "The oscillations of taste" (1970), "The becoming of criticism" (1976), "In praise of disharmony" (1976), "The daily fetish" (1988), "Conformists" (1997).

Also well known for his activity as a painter, in 1948 he was one of the founders of the MAC (Movimento Arte Concreta), which was a cornerstone of abstract art. In January 2017 he had inaugurated the exhibition "Vitriol, Drawings by Gillo Dorfles, 2016" at the Milan Triennale, a summa of his artistic thought. “I always have new projects – he said during the inauguration – otherwise I would have already died. Above all, they concern painting, my great passion. Even if it is painting so to speak: as an artist I cannot consider myself successful in an absolute way. Not as a critic, but as a painter I have always been an amateur”.
