The author died in the night in Rome at the age of 89 – Cantor of Naples and busy writer, Rea had won the Viareggio prize in 1996 with “Mistero napoletano”.

The journalist and writer died in the night in Rome Ermanno Rea. Born in Naples in 1927, Rea was 89 years old and had been ill for some time. His own city had been at the center of part of his production as a writer, with novels such as "Mistero napoletano", with which he had won the Viareggio prize in 1996, and "Napoli Ferrovia", finalist of the Strega in 2008.

A committed writer, Rea has recounted news stories of great human value in his works, such as in “La dismissione”, written in 2002, which recounted the closure of the Ilva/Italsider steel mill in Bagnoli and from which the film “La star that is not there”, by Gianni Amelio. As a young man Rea had served in the Communist Party and in 2014 had stood as a candidate with the Tsipras List in the European elections, not being elected.

Among the other titles of his production are mentioned "Fiery flames at an hour of night", winner of the Campiello Prize, "The last lesson. The loneliness of Federico Caffè, disappeared and never found again” and “The Piegari case, topicality of an old defeat”. His latest work, "Nostalgia", will be published posthumously in the coming months.
