And even if the season of this food is running out, you can still take advantage of the many benefits. How? Using the most leathery leaves of the artichoke which are usually thrown away and instead contain extraordinary properties, one can be created purifying herbal tea without waste. Other ingredients such as lemon, turmeric and ginger can also be added. For an even more draining, detoxifying and diuretic action, you can add fennel or fennel seeds.

A concentrate of "health" that should not be lost, ideal to be enjoyed after meals. Just think that in California, for example, it is even sold in bottles. Artichoke water can also be used as a base for making a vegetable soup (so it becomes richer in fibre).

Artichoke water: the benefits

The artichoke is a tasty vegetable known since ancient times and rich in beneficial properties for the body. Italian horticulturists boast the world record in production: Sicily and Sardinia have respectively obtained the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and the Protected Designation of Origin (DOP). Of the more than 90 varieties, all artichokes are rich in fibers, carbohydrates, protein e mineral salts (sodium, potassium, phosphorus and calcium) and, to a lesser extent, essential fatty acids. They have very few calories and with their numerous properties they are useful for stimulating the proper functioning of the intestine, promoting digestion and fighting abdominal swelling. Rehydrate the skin. Reboot the body after a period of excesses. Artichokes also contain the vitamin C, and vitamins of the group B, but also vitamins K, useful in the prevention of osteoporosis, iron and copper.

They help to keep cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and also those of blood sugar under control, therefore they are a valid aid for cardiovascular health.

How to prepare artichoke water

Ingredients: 3 medium artichokes and 1 liter of water. Carefully wash the artichokes and keep the outer leaves and waste aside. Pour the water into a saucepan and bring to a boil. Then add the artichoke waste and cook for about 15-20 minutes, cover with a lid. Once ready, filter the herbal tea and enjoy it. If you wish, you can sweeten it to taste. It can be taken cold or hot. Stored in the refrigerator it lasts about a week.

Artichokes: contraindications

Despite being an all-natural remedy, artichoke water has some contraindications. In case of use of diuretic drugs or liver problems it is advisable to talk to your doctor before starting the treatment. Furthermore, those who suffer from gallstones or are allergic to plants of the Asteraceae family and who are breastfeeding should also stay away from them.
