Il Municipality of Fiumicino, Land Reclamation Consortium of the North Rome Coast e Acea Ato 2 have signed a protocol of agreement for the reuse of wastewater in agriculture, out of Fregene purifier. The project, once completed, will represent one of the best practices in Italy for the optimization and recovery of water resources, with a view to reducing environmental impacts and combating drought. The agreement was signed by Mario Baccini, Mayor of the Municipality of Fiumicino, Niccolò Sacchetti, President of the Land Reclamation Consortium and Claudio Cosentino, President of Acea Ato 2.
The resource recovered from the purifier will go to increase water availability of the current irrigation system managed by the Land Reclamation Consortium, through the construction of a new supply pipeline that, from the outlet of the Fregene purification plant, will convey the refined water to the reclamation canal for subsequent irrigation distribution. The new infrastructure, for which the design phase has been concluded and the approval process is currently underway, has obtained a contribution of over 6 million from the Council of Ministers, being one of the projects identified by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to combat drought in various Italian regions.
“The use of the recovered resource, in the short and long term, - declared the Mayor Mario Baccini– will increase the current irrigation system, offering concrete and sustainable support to local agriculture and a response to the challenges posed by climate change. Thanks to this new management of water resources, farmers in our area will be able to count on a constant supply of water throughout the year. Thanks to the Minister of Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, for maintaining the necessary funding for the realization of the project that represents a model of excellence for the entire country.”
“In Italy - he specified Claudius Cosentino, President of Acea Ato 2– only four percent of wastewater is reused. The protocol signed today, together with the construction of a new supply pipeline, therefore represents an optimal model for managing water resources that will serve to secure, and protect from the risk of drought, an entire territory and its agricultural production. ACEA is also committed on a daily basis to providing effective responses to the territories it manages with sustainable strategies and innovative technologies, in a relationship of fruitful collaboration with local administrations and land reclamation consortia.”
“The Fregene purifier – he concluded Niccolo Sacchetti, President of Northern Coast Land Reclamation Consortium– is compliant with the highest purification standards, allowing the reuse of water resources in a safe and efficient manner. This guarantees concrete benefits for the environment, reducing the withdrawal of water from the Tiber precisely in the summer months, when the river reaches its minimum levels. We are also proud to place the Municipality of Fiumicino at the forefront in the protection of water resources and sustainable development and we thank Acea Ato2 and Professor Toscano of the University of Bologna and the University of Marche”.
