A driverless subway in Beijing

Are drivers and drivers a dying breed? Perhaps, if we project the progress of robotics into fifty years (but perhaps even earlier). Google's self-driving cars are already circulating on an experimental basis (although in fact a driver is present, but only to ensure that the software and hardware are doing their job).

Some driverless train experiments already exist, such as the very short shuttle that connects a terminal to the rest of Fiumicino airport. But a much bolder example is the driverless subway system in Beijing's southwest quadrant that will be launched in May next year, according to the Beijing Times. The new train will carry 80 passengers and travel at a maximum speed of XNUMXkm/h.

Indeed, most of Beijing's 17 subway lines can already operate without a driver, although someone is always present in the cab for emergencies.
