The King has been overthrown. The King is dead, long live the King. Franco Pepe, from the legendary Pizzeria Pepper in grains in Caiazzo in the province of Caserta he had to cede the crown of the best pizza in Italy (and therefore in the world) maintained by three competitions, to Francesco Martucci of The Masanielli in Caserta. This is the judgment of 50 Top Pizzas 2020, famous online guide of the sector.
A victory for Martucci which in a certain sense was in the air. The pizza chef from Caserta last year was, in fact, ranked ex aequo on the first podium of the competition next to Pepe. He finished third Simone Padoan (San Bonifacio, VR) de The limes which was awarded the coveted special prize of pizza maker of the year. Other Neapolitan glories of Neapolitan pizza follow: 50 Kalò by Ciro Salvo Pizzeria, The News 94, of Enzo Coccia, and Francesco & Salvatore Salvo de The Salvos of San Giorgio a Cremano and via Riviera di Chiaia in Naples.
Campania obviously wins the largest number of establishments in the ranking, 16. However, almost the entire peninsula is represented, starting with Lazio, Lombardy and Tuscany, at 6, followed by Veneto (4) , then Piedmont, Sardinia and Sicily (2), finally Abruzzo, Basilicata, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Marche and Puglia (1).
News also for the expected Italian Special Awards 2020. Among these the young pizza maker of the year award, given to Gennaro Police of the sign 'O Scugnizzo, of Arezzo, and that of a new pizzeria for 2020, assigned to the Roman one The Quintiles,of Marco Quintili. The 2020 performance (i.e. the biggest leap forward in the standings, from 106th place in 2019 to the current 29th) is instead the work of Restaurant Pizzeria Ciarly, of Naples. The amazing Future of Marinara by Francesco Martucci is the classic paw of the champion and wins the pizza of the year award. While to sign the daisy of the year is a master like Enzo Coccia (The News 94, Naples).
For the best fried food proposal, go to Acireale (CT), at Wheat, and for the best pasta omelette from Carlo Sammarco Pizzeria 2.0, in Frattamaggiore (NA). The Pastry in Pizzeria award goes to Dry Milan, while the best sweet pizza is the Pizza coladas di Your Pizza Illuminati (Rome). The best room service is by Francesco & Salvatore Salvo (Naples). The best wine, beer and oil lists are respectively: 50 Kalò by Ciro Salvo Pizzeria (Naples), Apogee (Pietrasanta, LU), Giangi Pizza and Research (Arielli, CH). Finally, the Best Format prize, awarded to Crust (MI), and the important Innovation and Environmental Sustainability award given to The Grottos (Caggiano, SA).
The prestigious ones were also awarded international awards for the top pizzerias in Japan, Canada, Asia and Oceania. To win them respectively: Pizzeria Braceria Cesari (Nagoya, Japan), Via Tevere Neapolitan Pizzeria (Vancouver, Canada), CIAK – In The Kitchen (Hong Kong, China) e 400 Degrees (Brunswick, Australia). Lastly, the latter Australian brand was also awarded the coveted prize for the Best Neapolitan Pizza outside Italy. Unfortunately this year it was not possible to draw up the rankings of the best pizzerias in the USA, South America and Africa due to the health emergency, which did not make the work of pizza makers and even less that of the inspectors easy.
