The Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump declared yesterday that if elected he would impose a 100% tariff on stellantis if the automaker tries to move jobs from the U.S. to Mexico, it reports Reuters.
He was speaking at a rally in the disputed state of Michigan, where another speaker claimed that the company was sending vehicles made by the Chrysler, owned by stellantis.
"Tell Stellantis that if they intend to move we will apply a 100% rate on every car…and they won’t move,” Trump said.
In Michigan, where industry and jobs have been hemorrhaging for years, Shawn Fain, the secretary of the UAW, the powerful metalworkers union Americans, held a very harsh rally yesterday against Stellantis. On the workers' signs there is an invitation to the company: "Keep your commitments". The union is about to decide on a strike against the ongoing staff cuts, denouncing the company's attempts to move production elsewhere. "They are trying to bully our members and our local chapters, we will not allow it!"
