Türkiye, former Inter player Sukur arrested

The 44-year-old, once he gave up playing football, chose to throw himself into politics: in 2011 he was elected to Parliament in the ranks of Erdogan's party, but he resigned in 2013 and admitted having sympathy for Gulen, deus ex machina of the failed coup of July 15th.

Türkiye, former Inter player Sukur arrested

Hakan Sukur ends up in the mesh of repression in Türkiye. The prosecutor has issued an arrest warrant against the former player of Turin, Inter, Parma and the Turkish national team, on charges of "belonging to an armed terrorist group". Everything revolves around the failed coup of July 15: the former striker ended up in the network of the preacher Fethullah Gulen, considered the mastermind of the coup.

The 44-year-old, once he gave up playing football, chose to throw himself into politics. In 2011 he was elected a deputy in Parliament in the ranks of Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP), but resigned in 2013, when the Turkish president broke with Gulen. The relationship with Erdogan cracks permanently: a proceeding is even opened against Sukur for "insults" to the president, so the former player decides to leave his country to move to California with his family. Is Sukur guilty? He admitted sympathy with the preacher, but denied any involvement in the failed coup.
