Poland against the tide, the victory of the pro-European Donald Tusk tells us that populism can be stopped

Tusk's electoral victory in Poland gives hope to pro-Europeans and is a bad blow for the populist, sovereignist and nationalist right. What will Meloni do now? Will she find the strength to break with the past and become a liberal-conservative leader or not?

Poland against the tide, the victory of the pro-European Donald Tusk tells us that populism can be stopped

Finally some good news after the tragedy of Gaza and that ofUkraine but also after Slovakia's sovereignist and pro-Russian turn: the electoral success in Poland of the former President of the European Council and convinced pro-European Donald Tusk against the ultranationalists of the PiS is a counter-current signal not only for Poland but for the whole of Europe a few months before the spring elections. A signal that brings Poland back among the countries that know that there is no alternative to Europe and a very clear signal that makes everyone understand that populism, sovereignism and nationalism are not invincible. They can be beaten, but a serious, concrete and convincing policy is needed. Like Tusk's.

Beyond the wars, in recent months the populist and nationalist fever has infected almost all of Europe: from Germany to Slovakia, to a large part of Eastern Europe, to Belgium, Austria, Sweden, without obviously forgetting Orban's Hungary and above all without forgetting the Italian case, where the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, the prime minister urges from the right Giorgia Meloni and exhibits on every occasion his unseemly alliance with the very French fascist Marine Le Pen. Now Poland's pro-European turn places Meloni even more at the crossroads that has tormented her since the beginning of her government: cultivate the sovereignist and reactionary suggestions of the past or finally decide to become a liberal-conservative leader? Meloni is a populist on the move: postponing the choice of the final destination is becoming increasingly difficult for her too and it is time for her to decide. A few more votes are not worth the authority that would come from a break with the past. So, twice thanks to Tusk.
