Orban, twenty EU countries against him: "Disloyal conduct". That's why no one asked him to mediate on Russia and Ukraine

“Disloyal conduct”: this is theaccusation which, according to what theHandle a twenty EU member states are ready to launch towards theHungary at Coreper, the main preparatory body of the Council made up of the heads or deputy heads of delegations of the 27 members of the European Union. The reason? The solo “peace” missions carried out in recent days since Hungarian president Viktor Orban, first in Kiev, below in Russia da Vladimir Putin and then in China da Xi Jinping. On all three occasions, the focus of the meetings was on war in Ukraine. On all three occasions, the European Union knew absolutely nothing about it.

Twenty EU states against Orban

Since 1 July, Hungary has been the rotating president of the EU. Orban's "missions", therefore, were not only not well received by the other member states, who were quick to talk about trips undertaken "in a personal capacity", while the European Commission was forced to clarify on several occasions that " Orban has no mandate to represent the EU in these visits." Several heads of state and government also spoke on the issue, expressing their opposition to the Hungarian president's initiatives. Not only that, Orban, in some of his statements in Moscow, "went directly against the conclusions of the European Council" and therefore "how is this reconciled with the principle of loyal cooperation?" asks a diplomat.

Hence the intention to accuse Hungary of "disloyalty", sending a "clear" message regarding the deliberate confusion generated by Orban between acting as leader of a single country and acting, instead, on behalf of the presidency of 'Union.

Orban, what the EU Commission said

“No contact before, no explanation after.” European Commission spokesperson Eric Mamer said this regarding Orban's trip to China. Responding to a Chinese journalist's question about the Hungarian prime minister's "skepticism" towards the mediation attempt, Mamer underlined: "Mediation by definition requires two parties and neither of the two parties, neither Ukraine nor Russia, has asked to mediate."

Weber's attack against the Patriot group

Meanwhile, the leader of the popular group Manfred weber, answering a question about the permanence of the so-called European sanitary cordon al Patriot group, in the next legislature, said: “Whoever is elected to this Parliament by European citizens has the right to work like everyone else and this must be guaranteed, but another thing is the roles in which this institution is represented. Those who go against the European project like Viktor Orban for example, who said he wants to dismantle the European Parliament, well, these people cannot represent this institution”.
