La Sicilia is one of the key stages of the cabling project Open Fiber in Southern Italy, aimed at providing the island with a ultrafast network broadband. Financed with Pnrr resources, ultra-fast connectivity has already reached 17 Municipalities, connecting 12.313 civic buildings and 25.618 real estate units.
Paula Martinez, head of Territorial Institutional Affairs of Open Fiber, presented the “1 Giga Italy” plan during the webinar organized by Anci Sicilia, highlighting the involvement of the Mayors. This initiative is part of the Italian strategy for ultra-broadband, promoted by the Department for Digital Transformation of the Presidency of the Council and implemented by Infratel Italia.
Martinez illustrated the methods of intervention for the laying of fiber optic cables in the Municipalities affected by the Plan, underlining the importance of collaboration to simplify the authorization processes. “This allows Open Fiber to accelerate the creation of fiber optic infrastructure and thus reduce the digital divide of the territories – adds Martinez -. An institutional synergy to support an intervention that provides citizens, businesses and the public administration with ultra-fast connectivity in line with the strategic objectives of the 'Digital Compass' envisaged by the European Union".
