Le conduct of Pasquale Striano, lieutenant of the Financial Police? “They seem difficult to me to be compatible with the logic of individual deviation. I believe there are many elements that conflict with the idea of an action conceived and organized by a single hypothetically unfaithful officer. One of the central points of the Perugia prosecutor's office will be to understand Striano's figure and system of relationships". He spoke like this today, on national anti-mafia prosecutor Giovanni Melillo in the Anti-Mafia commission. Both Melillo and the prosecutors of Perugia, Raffaele Cantone, in fact, they asked to be heard by the Presidential Committee of the CSM, by the president of the Anti-Mafia commission and by that of the Copasir as part of the investigation into the so-called "dossier" which uncovered at least 800 unauthorized accesses to public databases to collect information on political figures but also on "normal citizens". Precisely the fact that the Perugia prosecutor and the national Anti-Mafia prosecutor have asked to be heard - especially by Copasir, where they will be heard on Thursday - has triggered alert among parliamentarians, especially the majority.
Dossieraggio, Melillo's words in Antimafia
It is “my personal assessment. But – he adds – I also have a fair amount of experience as a victim of authentic abusive dossiers such as those found in the parallel archives of the Sismi headquarters entrusted to Pio Pompa in 2006”. And again: “The gravity of the facts being investigated is extreme. Illegal access to the SOS appears to have occurred, as well as reports of suspicious transactions, which have also occurred in recent weeks. Therefore, he says again in the hearing, "by different hands from those attributed today" by the magistrates. Melillo then explains that the request to be heard arises from a "spirit of sincere collaboration" between the institutions and also to extinguish "the messy controversies created to damage the image of the Anti-Mafia and the Bank of Italy".
Melillo: “Extraordinary weakness of computer networks”
“The extraordinary weakness of our IT networks, especially of the administration of justice, must be underlined. And this not only in the face of attacks - internal or external - on confidential data but due to the objective disproportion between the digital dimension of crime and terrorism and the combating capabilities of our system law enforcement. Already today, indeed for some time, I believe it is impossible to effectively investigate mafias and terrorism without adequately governing the cyber dimension", said Melillo again.
“In June 2022, when I also directly assumed responsibility for the technological resources, flows and security of the office, I asked the General Inspectorate of the Ministry of Justice for an inspection on the state of computerization and applications in use at DNA: a picture of worrying vulnerability and a whole series of organizational, structural and security critical issues emerged, combined with a general obsolescence of the software that exposed the workstations of individual magistrates, including myself, to attacks. The fact that there could have been attacks – concluded the prosecutor – does not mean that there have been such attacks, indeed we can exclude that there have been but this cannot reassure us”.
Dossieraggio, Melillo: "Use of SOS must be rigorous"
“The SOS are essential tools against money laundering and terrorist financing. And they are also a fundamental tool for the exercise of the investigative impulse and coordination functions of my office. The SOS are very delicate tools, they contain data, news and information capable of profiling anyone and revealing the nature of our personal and social relationships: from this it follows that the use of the SOS must be surrounded by the maximum rigor of access and subsequent control and must take place within the limits and for the exclusive purpose of the attribution of each institution involved", underlined Melillo.
