The charges of Police to the kids of Pisa who demonstrated for Palestine did not leave the President of the Republic insensitive, Sergio Mattarella, who, with an irregular move, picked up the phone and called the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi to show him all his concern. “The authority of the police – said the Head of State in severe but very clear words – cannot be measured by truncheons but on the ability to ensure security while protecting, at the same time, the freedom to express opinions publicly". The closing words of Mattarella's phone call to the minister were clear: "With the boys the truncheons express a failure".
La right he did not like it and accuses the left of having fomented the unrest and student demonstrations and of abetting the violence. The reactions of the oppositions were opposite and applauded the intervention of the President of the Republic. Piantedosi's attitude, however, was ambiguous as he first showed that he shared the meaning and words of the Head of State but then winked at the right.
