Un speech bittersweet was the one with which the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, greeted the Italians. His calls for peace, social justice and civic participation as essential elements to face current challenges and build a better future for Italy have won great approval from the political world.
Meloni: “Great depth and vision”
Giorgia Meloni defined President Mattarella's intervention as "an intervention of great depth and vision, particularly on the path towards peace and the end of conflicts", expressing gratitude for the attention dedicated to the younger generations. Furthermore, the Prime Minister expressed full agreement on the need to support employment, guarantee adequate wages, safety in the workplace and an efficient healthcare system during a telephone conversation with President Sergio Mattarella.
La Russa: “All sensitive topics”
Even the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, shared Mattarella's words, underlining his ability to represent all Italians. “All the sensitive issues on which firm words are needed were touched upon by his intervention with great wisdom. Even the choice of words was significant and it is difficult to isolate just a few: `The rejection of war´, `the culture of peace´ without appearing neutral, `love as a gift´, the condemnation of `unfounded accusations´ by separating the border between `true and false´, `emergencies and problems´, `the needs of young people´, the rights `enshrined in the Constitution´, `equality between men and women´ and progress as long as it is `human´”.
The comments of Salvini, Tajani and Lupi
The leader of the League and Minister of Transport, Matteo Salvini, appreciated the president's clear words on peace and the fight against terrorism, while Antonio Tajani of Forza Italia underlined the sharing of the fundamental values indicated by the Head of State. “Speak clear words on peace and the fight against all forms of terrorism, issues on which the League is and will always be at the forefront. Exactly like on other points touched by the president, such as the institutional and cultural fight against violence against women. It is good that the increase in employment and the growth of Italy are recognised, which the Democratic Party and 5 Stars foolishly refuse to do,” said Salvini. “Freedom, peace, respect for the person, defense of the elderly, trust in young people, dignity of work are the values to which the Head of State calls us. We share them and consider them the inspiring principles of our political action to be transformed into concrete facts every day", underlined Tajani.
Maurizio Lupi, leader of We Moderates, praised the speech for pointing the way in various areas, from the war in Ukraine to gender violence. “A speech that points the way, from the war in Ukraine to the terrorist aggression of Hamas, from the fight against gender violence to the valorisation of young people, from support for families to the challenges of artificial intelligence”.
The comments of Schlein, Conte and Renzi
Elly Schlein of the Democratic Party thanked Mattarella for having reaffirmed constitutional values. “In his speech, President Mattarella reaffirmed the values and principles of the Constitutional Charter, managing to place them in the political, economic and social contingency that the country and the planet are experiencing. Peace and social justice, for progress and the affirmation of democracy". While Giuseppe Conte of the M5S saw in the message an incentive to work for peace. “The message that arrives this evening is an unequivocal stimulus to change things, not to give up. We cannot but welcome the appeal not to get used to the horror of war and to work immediately, urgently, for peace."
Matteo Renzi of Italia Viva thanked the president for his words of humanity. “On behalf of all of Italia Viva, I thank President Mattarella for the words of humanity that he used and for the constant stimulus to improve the quality of Italian politics”.
