Mario Negri goes against the grain, the research institute founded by Garattini does not patent drugs and wins the Edinburgh Medal

There is an Italy that is honored abroad and not only in sport but also in science and technology. This is the case of the Milanese institute of pharmacological research Mario Negri, founded in 1961 by the philanthropist of the same name and Silvio Garattini, internationally renowned scientist and today President of the institute directed by Joseph Remuzzi. Mario Negri is a true jewel of Italian research but it is also a unique reality: everything he does does not do for profit, so much so that does not patent its drugsi, but makes his discoveries available to everyone, from industry to governments. Precisely for this reason, for the excellence of its research but also for the very high ethical depth that leads it to favor the collective interest, yesterday the institute received a prestigious international recognition and won the Edinburgh Medal. It is an award that in the past has gone to Nobel winners and high-sounding personalities, and which was created "to honor the men and women of science and technology who have made significant contributions to the understanding and well-being of humanity ”. Scientific excellence, a strong ethical dimension and a strong civic sense: Mario Negri is all of this. The joy of President Garattini, Director Remuzzi and the 9 thousand researchers of the institute is understandable. “Our aim is only the care of the sick” said Remuzzi, in full harmony with the philosophy of the founders.
