It is very unlikely that Mario Draghi, the most esteemed Italian in the world, may become the new President of European Commission. Not only because the Germans are unlikely to give up even if the lackluster candidacy of the Von der Leyen fades more every day, but why Super Mario he doesn't seem to have all this desire to take on such a demanding role again after being President of the ECB and Prime Minister with great brilliance. But if Giorgia Meloni should he nominate him for the Presidency of the European Council? So who knows. It's been days since "the Republic” relaunched his candidacy, which was born a few months in the mind of the French President Emmanuel Macron in a conversation with the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. And this morning it was “Il Sheet” to talk about it again with a captivating but not unfounded title: “The breathtaking embrace between Draghi and Meloni already exists. Evidence".
Certainly if Europe wants to regain authority in the world and if Meloni wants to conquer a front row role in Europe there is only one card on the table: SuperMario Draghi. Only he would be able to stand up to the White House even in the unfortunate event that he were to return Donald Trump and only he would be able to communicate without hesitation with the China. And only he would be able to restore Europe's shine. No one certainly forgets that the current prime minister was the only Italian leader constantly in opposition to the Draghi government. However, times change and Il Foglio is not entirely wrong in listing the current elective affinities between Draghi and Meloni: 1) they are both fervent Atlanticists; 2) they are both on a pro-European line (from the new Stability Pact to the new agreement on migrants, with the sole temporary (?) exception of the ESM); 3) they are both pro Ukraine without any ifs or buts.
But for the Draghi hypothesis to take off, always assuming that SuperMario is interested, it is essential that his candidacy for the Presidency of the European Council is launched by the Italian Government and by Meloni. Political fantasy? Maybe but sometimes dreams come true. So why not give it a try. Courage, Giorgia: throw your heart over the obstacle. You will not regret.
